Staff survey questions
30 questions written for the way staff teams actually work: shifts, equipment, induction, supervisors and leadership.
"Staff" and "employee" mean the same thing in a survey. Schools, hospitals, charities and public bodies tend to say staff, and many of their teams work shifts, so these questions cover schedules, safety and supervisors as well as the usual topics.
Frontline and shift teams
For teams where the working day is set by a rota.
Support and office staff
For teams that depend on other departments.
Induction and development
How well people were set up and how they can progress.
Leadership and communication
How staff hear about decisions and whether they are asked first.
Belonging and wellbeing
How it feels to work with these people.
Reaching staff without a desk
- Offer the survey on a phone, with a link or QR code on a break room poster.
- Give people paid time to answer. Ten minutes in the shift gets more responses than asking people to do it at home.
- Keep it under 15 questions for teams who cannot sit at a computer.
- Translate it into the languages your teams speak.

Questions
What is a staff survey?
A staff survey asks the people who work in an organization how they experience their jobs, their managers and the workplace. It is the same method as an employee survey.
How do you run a staff survey with shift workers?
Make it short, let people answer on a phone, and give paid time during the shift. A survey that needs a desk will miss the people who most need to be heard.
